and the surrounding areas. Every woman should have the support and encouragement of a Doula while she is giving birth.
WHAT IS A DOULA ?
Doula is a Greek word that means ‘servant or slave’. Today the
reference to the word Doula brings a new meaning for the laboring woman or couple. A Doula is a woman who is trained to provide
physical comfort, emotional support, information and resources to a pregnant mother and her partner during labor and birth
and for a short period postpartum.
Doula’s offer uninterrupted support and encouragement during labor and delivery.
They bring knowledge and experience, applying new ideas for laboring positions, relaxation techniques, massage and much more
to be able to give the laboring mother much needed extra support while in labor. Doula’s also offer support to the mothers
partner and family.
WHY DO I NEED A DOULA ?
Many studies have been done about the
use of Doula’s for the laboring mother. The studies show that having a Doula present
*Reduces the length of labor by approximately
2 hours.
*Reduces the rate of cesarean-birth by
50%.
*Reduces the use of an epidural by 47%.
*Reduces the use of analgesia by 35%.
*Reduces the use of Pitocin by 26%.
*Reduces the use of forceps 18%.
I have a strong belief that every woman
can benefit from having a Doula present during her labor and birth. Whether they birth at home, in a birth center, or at a
hospital, whether they have a midwife or an obstetrician attending their birth, whether they are planning cesarean, vbac,
or vaginal birth with or without epidural and/or analgesics, whether it is your first baby or your fifth, you and your baby
will benefit from a Doula’s care, attention and experience.
